Location: Redemption Church, 3400 Garvers Ferry Rd., Lower Burrell
Would you like to help a young or struggling reader
gain confidence and master basic reading skills?
Reading Outreach is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization committed to training volunteers
and equiping them with the tools needed to provide robust reading instruction to struggling readers.
Our fall tutor training is free for anyone who is sponsored by a church or community organization and who commits to volunteering to help a child learn to read. In addition to the training, you will also be given a tutor tote bag that includes Level 1 of the Reading Outreach curriculum. These easy-to-follow scripted lessons are user-friendly and focused on teaching sound and letter patterns using Science of Reading principles.
Are you looking for a place where you can help? We hope to develop relationships with churches and communtiy organizations as we grow. You can approach your own church or organization and start simply with just one active tutor.
Churches and Community Organizations: We provide free training to any individuals from your organization or church who would like to offer reading tutoring to children in your community. Learn more here or see the FAQs below.

FAQs
What does the volunteer tutoring kit include?
The volunteer kit includes the first level of the Reading Outreach Curriculum. This teaching resource provides lessons with direct, explicit, multi-sensory teaching of reading skills and concepts following a scope and sequence designed to build and practice essential reading skills. The lessons, along with supporting videos, provide you as a tutor with the support you need to help a reader make real progress in developing their reading skills.
How do I qualify to receive the training and kit for free?
To receive both the training and materials for free, we ask that you agree to volunteer to meet with a child and take them through Level 1 of the Reading Outreach curriculum, at a rate of three 30-minute sessions per week or two 45 to 60-minute sessions per week, and provide your services for free. Depending on the child, this could take 6 to 12 weeks on average, but could be more or less, depending on your unique child and situation. This initial level serves as a strong remediation and reading boost. As a volunteer tutor, you will also have the option to continue with additional levels for a reasonable charge per level and you will own these levels once aquired.
Our church or non-profit organization would like to help struggling readers in our community. (Or, I'd like to help our church/non-profit get involved) Can we receive the training?
Yes! Potential volunteers from a church or community group can receive the training for free during our fall training, when you provide a completed sponsorship form from your organization. See the Churches and Community Organizations page for more information.
Do you offer this training online?
For our fall launch, the free tutor training is in-person only and there is no online version at this time.
Can I use this to teach my own child, or grandchild (or other related child)? Or: Can I use this for homeschooling my own (or other) children?
If you would like to help or teach your own child, or a child you are related to, or to teach in a homeschool setting, you may also take the training, but we will request an affordable $50 fee for your participation.
I am a teacher or tutor that charges for my services. Can I use these materials to work with my students?
We ask that professional tutors make the same commitment to be sponsored by a church or community organization and to tutor one child at no charge, through level 1, if you wish to take advantage of our training and materials. Our training is perfect for professionals that want to learn more about structured literacy techniques for teaching reading. Non-sponsored professionals pay the same $50 training fee. As a professional, you could also be an ideal person to consider starting or overseeing a local tutoring outreach. We hope that you'll consider it!
I would like to help a child, but I don't know anyone personally. Do you provide children who need help?
As we grow the number or organizations or churches that train volunteers through Reading Outreach, we will be able to provide additional referrals. Note: If you belong to any church or organization that is willing to sponsor your training, we can provide it for free if you attend our fall training. See below for more details.
