Our Story
Reading Outreach was founded in 2021 when a reading specialist and experienced dyslexia tutor trained a group of volunteers to begin working with struggling readers, using a structured, multisensory curriculum to provide robust reading remediation similar to what private, 1-on-1 tutoring clients receive.
We started in a church building with 5 students and over the next 4 years, we've informally partnered with two community organizations in New Kensington, Pennsylvania.
By year two, we developed our own volunteer-friendly, easy-to-use teaching materials. Combined with our training and videos, it has allowed volunteer tutors to provide a systematic teaching approach that has been effective in helping their students make significant reading gains.
Our "secret sauce" combines two key ingredients: The support of scripted teaching lessons and training, plus the power of using 1-on-1 focused instruction and practice two times a week.
In 2026, we officially became a stand-alone, 501 (3)(c) nonprofit organization with the goal of training and supporting more volunteers and reaching more students who need reading help. Our mission has remained the same since the start: Reading Outreach seeks to train volunteer tutors to provide a 1-on-1 structured reading intervention to struggling readers in their communities, thus providing access to high quality instruction to all students, regardless of socio-economic status.
